On Sunday, October 12, 2025, Angelenos experienced the joy of car-free streets during CicLAvia—Heart of LA, presented by Metro. The beloved event celebrated its 15th anniversary and 63rd open streets edition, drawing thousands of residents to a 7.15-mile route spanning MacArthur Park, Historic Downtown, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Arts District, East LA, the 6th Street Viaduct, and Mariachi Plaza.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the streets transformed into a vibrant “pop-up park,” where participants of all ages and abilities walked, biked, skated, jogged, and reconnected with their city in a whole new way. CicLAvia continues to prove that Los Angeles can be a city designed for people, community, and sustainability.
15 Years of Transformation
Since its launch in 2010, CicLAvia has welcomed more than two million participants and opened over 355 miles of city streets. Inspired by Bogotá’s weekly ciclovía, it has redefined Los Angeles by promoting active transportation, health, and environmental resilience. This anniversary event honored the journey with a special Caltrans exhibit at the Norma Dorsey Museum, showcasing memorabilia, photos, and maps from every past route.
Executive Director Romel Pascual reflected on the milestone:
“Returning each October to where CicLAvia started in Los Angeles is always nostalgic but there’s also always something new to explore, see, taste, and enjoy.”
Hubs of Connection
Participants gathered at four bustling hubs:
-
MacArthur Park Hub (West 7th Street)
-
Chinatown Hub (North Broadway)
-
Little Tokyo Hub (South Central Avenue)
-
Mariachi Plaza Hub (1st Street)
Each hub offered family-friendly programming, bike repair, hydration stations, first aid, pedicab rides, and rest areas. These spaces became lively points of culture, connection, and community throughout the day.
Health, Mobility, and Inclusion
CicLAvia highlights the importance of people-powered transportation, from walking and skating to biking and running. Manual and motorized wheelchairs are welcomed, ensuring accessibility for all. By temporarily removing cars, CicLAvia also provided a healthier environment with reduced emissions and improved air quality, reinforcing its role as a model for sustainable urban living.
Looking Ahead
As part of its anniversary, CicLAvia introduced the $15 per month Street Star donor program, inviting supporters to help sustain future events while enjoying exclusive perks such as commemorative pins and invitations to the Heart of LA Birthday Lunch.
The 2025 CicLAvia season concludes November 23 with CicLAvia—Melrose Ave, offering another opportunity for Angelenos to come together in celebration of community, mobility, and shared space.
